The Jeannette Rankin Foundation is a non-profit organization who recognizes the hardships and dreams of single mothers to provide good future for her children. It was named after an inspiring American woman who had great determination to help her fellow American mothers, Jeannette Rankin.

Jeannette Rankin was an advocate of women’s rights and was the first elected woman in the US House of Representatives and the US Congress. Even after her death, she continued to help working mothers by leaving a certain amount of money. This has led to the establishing of the JRF Scholarships and Grants for single mothers.

The Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund is a scholarship program for single mothers.  It provides a subsidy to low-income women ages 35 and up regardless of the race, religion, color, marital status, national origin or physical disability. It helps mothers who are pursuing a higher degree of education such as technician or vocational education, an associate degree or a first bachelor degree.

For 2009, Jeannette Ranking Foundation has awarded over 80 single mothers their scholarships. Half of them were new students and the remaining half were mothers who renewed their scholarship. Each beneficiary receives a minimum of ,000 scholarship grant depending on the JRF scholarship criteria.

The foundation receives new applicants yearly.  Every November 1st, the foundation announces the exact number of scholarship grants available for the coming year. By July 1st, the JRF releases the complete list of the recipients.

The foundation new and understands the need of education to alleviate poverty in the affected families and communities. To qualify for the grant, a woman must be a US citizen ages 35 or older and working having a low income based on the income guidelines of the Jeannette Rankin Foundation. She should also be enrolled in the accredited university or school pursuing a technical or vocational education, an associate degree or first bachelor’s degree.

The application is open for the school year 2010-2011. It started out last November 2009 and will be ended on March 1, 2010. All interested parties can download the application forms until February 29, 2010 or receive it by mail by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the address provided by the foundation.
